Challenge

One of our more common data sources in an Oracle EPM application is Human Resource data, typically sourced from HRIS systems like Workday, ADP, or Paylocity. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), passed by the European Union in 2016, significantly impacts how we handle data for companies operating in Europe. Our client, with a substantial presence in Europe, faces these challenges directly. While there are various options for data integration, not all provide encrypted data. Unfortunately, Oracle Cloud EPM cannot consume encrypted files directly, necessitating that the data reside on the server in plain text format for a limited time.

Solution

Groovy provided us with an innovative way to integrate with challenging data sources. Through Workday’s Reporting as a Service (RAAS) functionality, we gained access to a report, enabling us to connect directly to Workday and download information over an encrypted connection. Groovy is available to any Oracle Cloud EPM Enterprise customer, allowing Business Rules to be written in Groovy in addition to the traditional Calculation Script language. Groovy can perform various functions, such as connecting to external web services, downloading and processing data, and reading and writing Oracle Cloud EPM data, among other capabilities.

Result

Utilizing Groovy, we provided a fully encrypted solution that satisfied even the most stringent IT Security requirements. We were able to load roughly 300,000 cells of data across 3,000 employees in less than 20 seconds. We can also use Groovy to build out meta-data from our source. Another benefit to this process is that there is no outside data management process to automate or interaction with EPM Automate. An admin can run this entire process in a few seconds with a single click. In the end, we are left with a relatively simple and elegant solution.
