Brian Marshall's Sessions

MDX Reloaded: From ASO to Everywhere

MDX has been around for over 20 years, but it's historically been limited to ASO cubes β€” until now. With Oracle bringing MDX into cloud forms, this session builds MDX from the ground up: the history of the language, how it compares to traditional Essbase calc scripts and SQL, the core building blocks (members, sets, tuples, axes), and hands-on query examples using functions like Children, Descendants, TopCount, Filter, and Crossjoin. It closes with a look at what MDX-based forms will look like once Oracle ships them in the cloud.

A practical tour of how AI actually shows up across Oracle EPM Cloud today β€” not just the hype. Covers the evolution from Predictive Planning through Insights, Auto-Predict, and Advanced Predictions, including which products get which features and what's required to turn each one on. Also covers the three new generative AI features in Narrative Reporting: Comparative Analysis, Causality for Exceptions, and Describe Exceptions β€” now expanded beyond Narrative Reporting into Planning, FreeForm, EPBCS, FCCS, and Tax as of the June 2026 update.

A real-world case study of a national mortgage lender β€” 750+ branches, 7,000+ loan officers, $22B+ in annual funded volume β€” replacing a maxed-out Excel reporting process with NetSuite EPM Free Form Planning. Walks through the full architecture, including the EPM Integration Agent, Groovy event scripts, and how 750,000+ historical loans get automatically categorized and reported at the loan-officer level. The full nightly refresh completes in about 25 minutes.

Oracle EPM Reportsβ€”A Practical Guide for New Users

A beginner's walkthrough of Oracle EPM Reports for anyone new to the tool or still migrating off Financial Reports. Covers the full lifecycle: accessing the Reports module, creating a report and a grid from scratch, setting up headers/footers with dynamic text formulas, saving and testing habits that'll save you a rebuild, formula and formatting basics, and exporting to HTML, PDF, or Excel. Wraps with an introduction to Books, Bursting, and scheduled Jobs for automated distribution.

The follow-up for anyone already comfortable with the Reports basics. Goes deep on advanced techniques: sophisticated formulas and prompts, hidden grids for pulling in secondary data sources, conditional formatting and suppression (including where GenAI conditions get configured), alternate alias tables for multi-language or multi-division labeling, visualizing Supporting Detail, "butterfly" report layouts, fixing ugly Excel tab names, and automating distribution through Books, Bursting, and Jobs.
